Study Group Information
The Third Mathematics in Medicine Study Group (MMSG2002) took place at the University of Nottingham from 9–13 September 2002. Approximately 50 participants attended the meeting and worked on five different problems, chosen to encompass many aspects of medicine from practical issues associated with existing technology (e.g. atomic force microscopy and hydrocephalus shunts) to understanding the mechanisms that lead to clinical conditions (such as atherosclerotic plaque rupture and odontogenic cyst growth).
The meeting opened on the Monday, when the problems were presented to the participants, and closed on the Friday, when results obtained in the intervening days were summarised. These proceedings contain detailed reports of the progress made on each of the five problems.
In addition to the research discussion, three invited lectures were organised. In the first, Prof. Jenny Southgate (York) provided an overview of modelling opportunities in the urothelium. Later in the week, Prof. James Keener (Utah) illustrated how mathematics can be used to provide insight into the mechanism of fibrillation onset following a heart attack. In the final invited lecture Dr Jonathan Bard (Edinburgh) gave an overview of the field of bioinformatics. We would like to thank everyone who attended the Study Group and helped to make it such an interesting and productive week.
