UK MMSG Diabetic Retinopathy Followup Meeting 2010

The meeting took place at the University of Nottingham, on Thursday 28th January 2010, as part of the UK Mathematics-in-Medicine Study Groups series. This was a follow-up meeting, inspired by the problem Diabetic retinopathy, which was studied at the UK MMSG Imperial College 2009.

A preliminary meeting had identified the following areas for further discussion, with a view to publishing a peer-reviewed paper based on the work at the study group:

  1. Response of the model to Glucose concentration;
  2. Effect of intervening space;
  3. Rate of glutamate release;
  4. Justification of reaction terms.

The meeting discussed these areas in detail and agreed that they were all important factors to consider. Alex Foss also highlighted that for the model to become applicable in a clinical context, Lactate would need to be included. Therefore the majority of the meeting involved the discussion on how this might be done and the likely effects on other components within the model.

The actions resulting from the meeting were therefore

  1. Include lactate in the model;
  2. Nondimensionalisation of equations
  3. Investigate response our key physiological parameters

It was decided that Alex Foss and Helen Byrne would ensure the details of (1) are physiologically correct before we proceed with any resulting analysis. A further meeting is likely to be arranged sometime in May 2010.
